Ellin Childs (Hayes) - 1964
Jean Blake (Hubble) - 1964

So I am sure that all of you are wondering, "What exactly is a sussie?" and "How do you pronounce that?"  Sussie rhymes with fussy.  And here's the story...

Back in 1961, Ellin Childs (my mom) and Jean Blake (who, at the time, went by Jeanne because she thought it was pretty hip) met.  Apparently, they were at a youth church meeting when Jeanne asked Ellin if they could go get some water at the drinking fountain together.  My mom, being a bit shy, said no.  Not very nice, but they still chatted and soon came to be the best of friends.

Anyway, sometime during their days at Annandale High in Annandale, Virginia, they came up with the word sussie.  Neither of them seems to recall the exact origin of the word.  I have drilled them on it, but I guess it was a long time ago...  I'll throw out there that maybe it is a derivitave of the word surprise.  It was intended to mean a small gift or treat, but, more importantly, it is a small gift given for no particular reason.

All growing up, whenever my mom would come home from being on a trip, we would be so excited for our sussies.  And then there were times when she would come home from the store with a sussie for us.  I can remember how much fun it was to open a little gift just because.  Even today, now that my mom is retired and travels more, we will have "Sussie Night" when she returns to give out the little trinkets that she picked up on her trip.  The word sussie has stayed with our family and I'm sure will continue on through my children.

After I had two children of my own, I decided to become a full-time stay-at-home mom.  But having worked for ten years, I felt like I should be doing something.  I have always wanted to do something that I love for my work.  One night, while online, I discovered a scrapbook kit-of-the-month club website.  The kit for sale was so cute.  I promptly handed over my credit card number and became a member.  It was so much fun!  I felt like a little kid at Christmas each month when I saw that package waiting on my doorstep for me. It was so much fun that I thought I'd like to do that for others.  Because sussies were such a fun, family tradition, I liked the idea of combining the word with a monthly scrapbooking kit. Thus, Scrapbook Sussies was born!  I thought it fit perfectly - a monthly little scrapbooking treat that arrives at your door for no reason - just for fun!  (Just try not to start chanting "Sussies, sussies, sussies!" when it arrives!)

Join the club and add the word, sussie, to your vocabulary.
