NEW OPTION FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T SCRAPBOOK! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ IN MEMORY: Many of you are aware of how my year began. On January 27th, just after putting my kids to bed, my husband called me downstairs to his basement office. He was on the phone with someone. I didn't know who, but he was being very quiet. It did not take me very long to realize that something was very wrong. The vision of the pain etched in his face is still with me today. When he got off the phone, he told me there had been a car accident on I-80 in Nebraska. Instantly, I knew it was my brother's family as they were driving home from a family event. My husband had to then tell me that my niece, Cora, and my nephew, Michael had been killed. Obviously, it hurts so much and even three months later painfully takes my breath away when I truly realize that they are gone. Michael was an athletic young man, but so very sweet. He loved baseball, skateboarding, snowboarding, and golf. He taught my daughter, Annie, how to jump off of a diving board. He was always there to help out my son, Ryan. He always asked so nicely if he was allowed to play pool whenever he came over to our house. My sister and I were always competing over who was the best aunt. Cora was simply a joy. Always a smile on her face and a laugh when you would tickle her. A very cautious, young child - she still would sit down to go down the stairs at her house. A very best friend to my daughter. It is hardest for Annie to accept the loss of her best cousin - her first sleepover friend - her 'almost sister'. But we are getting by. We have a strong support system and have really relied on that these past few months. Throughout this time, we have come to realize how lucky we are that we do have this support system. We have wondered about people in similar situations without the same support. So, to both honor and memorialize Michael and Cora and to help grieving children who don't have the same support system, we have incorporated The Michael and Cora Betts Legacy Foundation as a non-profit organization. We are planning on throwing a Golf Tournament in Michael's memory and a Princess Charity Ball (A real royal ball for the whole family!) in memory of Cora. All of the proceeds for this event will support Judi's House. Judi's House is an organization here in Denver created solely for helping grieving children. 100% of their services are offered for free. It is simply an amazing place and we are so proud to help them out. Other organziations have begun honoring Michael and Cora as well. Michael's baseball team has vowed to go to State for him and they begin every game with a 'MICHAEL' yell while all hands are in on the huddle. A baseball field in our county will be named after Michael and Cora. With so many things geared more towards the athletics of Michael, Scrapbook Sussies decided to do something in Cora's memory. Cora was always known as Cora-Roo. Her favorite animal was a kangaroo. I don't know if any of you remember, but when I first went to CHA, there was a giant Kangaroo stuffed animal being given away. I made sure to 'win' (aka - beg and plead my case to the booth owner) one of these kangaroos. I have a hilarious picture of it next to me in the convertible car with sunglasses on in Vegas and on the conveyor belt at the airport, having just been checked onto the plane to bring back home to Cora. As I thought about it, I realized that there wasn't very many scrapbooking paper with kangaroos on it. And with a kangaroo being such a motherly animal, you would think that would be great for scrapbooking! So, with the help of my SIL, Debbie (Cora's mom) and my sister, we have designed a scrapbook paper line, stickers, and rub-ons called the Scrapbook Sussies Cora-Roo Line. (And just a little added tid-bit of info - on three of the papers, there is a small hidden baseball - just to make sure we don't ignore Michael completely!) 100% of the profit from the sale of these kits will go to the Michael & Cora Betts Legacy Foundation! _________________________________________________________________
